Back, with a change to the format of sorts...

With the launch of http://bohmblog.blogspot.com , I figured I can just focus on hockey now with this blog, so now rantings and ravings about the other 29 teams, WJC and Olympic stuff will be found here.

Today apparently there's some sort of announcement coming to do with the Olympics. Strange, you'd think we would have heard something about this in the last year. To say this is a highly anticipated day is an understatement. I believe the selection announcement is being carried on 13 different television channels here in Canada. What can I say, sometimes we perpetuate the stereotype. Fans and pundits alike continue to speculate down to the wire about who should be there and who should not. So, here are my choices (and I believe I have changed them once or twice already):

Goalies:
Brodeur, Luongo, Fleury

Defencemen:
Neidermeyer, Boyle, Weber, Keith, Seabrook, Green, Pronger

Forwards:
Crosby, Thornton, Heatley, Marleau, Nash, Getzlaf, Perry, Stamkos, B Richards, Toews, Savard, Doan, Morrow

Taxi squad:
Iginla, M Richards, Lecavalier

back... and pissed off as usual

Anyone that knows me knows how I feel about head shots. This issue is going to cause serious damage to the game if it isn't addressed in a manner more suited to the gravity of the situation. The latest unsuspended head shot came on Saturday, as Chicago played Pittsburgh.

Here's the issue: 1) So many people are rationalizing this hit because of who it's on. This logic is so bizarre it's sickening. Matt Cooke is a dirty player. No doubt about it. That means JACK SHIT!! The moment you start taking into account the reputation of the person who is attacked in the situation you send a dangerous message to the players "some of you are protected, some of you are on your own". The other issue here was Keith's motivation. Did Cooke take a run at him? Do something dirty? Nope. A clean hit as part of the play. Keith sees and opportunity to get in a cheap shot and takes it. Cooke never sees him coming and fortunately wasn't hurt. Maybe that's what needed to happen for the NHL to do something about this? Maybe Cooke needed a concussion? Maybe a broken neck? Either way, the only thing more gutless than Keith in this is the NHL and it's officials, for giving an 'elite' player a free shot at a guy who was recently suspended for the same thing. That isn't the kind of justice we need in hockey.

Ballard's boneheaded move...

To say this ranks up there with some of the all-time dumbest things ever in sports is an understatement. I've never been a fan of the whole "I fucked up so I am gonna smash my stick into a billion pieces with my Hulk-like rage" thing. I get you screwed up and feel like shit. But what happened this time shows exactly why players need to keep their emotions even somewhat in check. As far as suspending Ballard? Nope. Believe me, being the butt of jokes for the rest of his career is punishment enough. Seriously, the guy could break Sittler's record of 10 points in a game, and they will still talk about this, with the record as a side note. Add in that he crashed into Colorado's Craig Anderson last night, and maybe goalies league wide need to be concerned about the threat of attack by the NHL's latest menace.

Hockey News: Canucks extend Luongo, Finns pull huge upset at Women's Canada Cup

As a Canucks fan, can't find a better way to start your day than opening your browser to find that the team has agreed to terms on an extension with star goalie Roberto Luongo. You had to know after they pulled off a stunning trade Friday with the Sharks, adding DMen Christian Erhoff and Brad Lukowich, and signing veteran Mathieu Schnieder, that the acquisitions were as much about bolstering their defense as it was sending a message to Luongo: We are building a better team around you. It makes for an interesting storyline heading into training camp, as their D now has Erhoff, Lukowich, Schneider, Sami Salo, Kevin Bieksa, Alex Edler and the recently re-signed Shane O'Brien competing for 6 spots. Looks as though Mike Gillis' deals aren't done yet, but you have to give him credit for putting his stamp on the team. The Canucks still need to hear from Mats Sundin, as well as address their need for a top 6 forward...

The Women's Canada Cup got underway in Vancouver last night, and while Team Canada cruised to an easy 6-0 victory over Sweden, the Finns pulled a jaw-dropping upset of the U.S. The Americans had a 2=0 lead in the first, but let it slip away. It's interesting to see how sometimes the U.S. team can look so good, yet when they blow a game (think back to the loss to the Swedes in the semi-finals in Turin, or the OT loss to this Finn team in China in the '08 Worlds) they can look so bad. The Finns take on Canada tonight, I will go out on a limb and say they get brought back down to earth.

I am not sure about all the issues that have led to Paul Kelly's firing as head of the NHLPA, but it shows you how messed up the NHL is when Kelly gets the boot oafter a year, yet Gary Bettman still has a job.

In The Beginning...

So here it is... another blog. How do hockey and metal mix, exactly? Well, both involve skill, speed and a kind of ferocity that differs from the other styles of sports and music. So we will see if we can't put together a little something that may turn some hockey fans into metalheads and vice versa. We are looking for people to contribute to this blog, both hockey and metal writers (preference will be given those who can write both, though). I would like to see writers who are focused hockey-wise on specific teams (no bias here, I have my other blog for my team of choice). So drop me an email at waachcast at gmail.com and let me know why you think you would be a great part of the team. I would like some background on your writing experience (links, samples, etc.), your team, and musical preferences. Cheers.
